Used Car Check List
Buying a car is a commitment – both financially and to a certain extent, emotionally. Whether it is a brand new car or a used car, chances are you are going to be stuck with it for a while. Buying a used car is especially tricky, since it is possible that it has gone through some rough patches. But the previous owner would probably be more concerned about selling you the car than telling you the truth. Short of hauling it into a car garage for a full inspection – here is a useful DIY checklist you can follow when you are inspecting a used car. Engine and Transmission
1. Start the vehicle
2. Check for smoke out of the tailpipe
3. Observe idle speed
4. Check transmission shifting ease
5. Check clutch (if equipped)
6. Check transmission smoothness while driving Climate Control
1. Operate air conditioning
2. Test fan speeds
3. Operate heater
4. Test vent settings
5. Test vent flappers Brakes
1. Brake test from 30 mph
2. Brake test from 50 mph
3. Check ABS operation
4. Confirm pedal feel Steering and Alignment
1. Check vehicle tracking
2. Check for noise in steering
3. Check for steering wheel angle Suspension
1. Observe ride quality
2. Check steering input reaction
3. Drive over dips
4. Drive over speed bumps
5. Check for leaks on shocks and struts
