Beijing National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), China The National Stadium in Beijing, already crowned the world’s largest enclosed space, will be at the very heart of China’s Olympic action. As part of Beijing’s 3.4 billion US dollar redevelopment, the stadium will host the Olympics most popular events, including track and field and the opening and closing ceremonies. 100,000 spectators inside the stadium and millions more around the world will witness the spectacular view. The nature inspired birds nest design won the hearts of Beijing’s population of 14 million, who voted it their favourite from a collection of 13 designs. This revolutionary design perfectly combines ecology and cutting edge technology to create a new icon for China and the city of Beijing. Building this pioneering stadium also poses a number of challenges. Earthquakes and steel shortages, combined with an ever-looming deadline are just some of the challenges for the engineers building it. Yet when finished it will be the most advanced sports stadium the world.
